IRS replaced an ageing 1990 R22 chiller with a new Daikin system, upgrading the pumps, buffer tank and pipework, and treating the water throughout to restore reliable performance.

Our client came to us with an aging R22 Hitachi chiller that had been in service since 1990. After more than three decades of use, the unit was reaching the end of its working life, and the surrounding pump and buffer tank setup was also showing its age. IRS was appointed to design and install a complete replacement system that would restore reliability and bring the site's cooling infrastructure up to modern standards.
This kind of project sits firmly within our industrial refrigeration work, where replacing outdated plant with more efficient equipment is often the best long-term solution for a site rather than continuing to repair older units.
Given the condition of the existing external pumps and buffer tank, we recommended a full system upgrade rather than a like-for-like swap. The works included:
Selecting a chiller with the pump and tank built in meant we could address several ageing components in one go, rather than treating them as separate repairs further down the line.
One of the key issues on site was the poor water quality within the system, which can affect the performance and lifespan of any chiller if left untreated. To resolve this, we carried out a professional chemical flush of the entire system before the new chiller was brought online. Glycol was then added, helping to protect the system going forward and support consistent performance from the new equipment.
Taking this step meant the new chiller was installed into a clean, well-maintained system, giving it the best possible conditions to run efficiently from day one.

With the new Daikin chiller, upgraded pump and tank, stainless steel pipework and a freshly flushed system all in place, [Client Name] now benefits from a modern, reliable commercial air conditioning setup built to last. The improvements reduce the likelihood of leaks and inefficiencies that often come with older R22 systems, while the stainless steel pipework and treated water help protect the investment for years to come.
This project reflects our wider approach across our industrial air conditioning and refrigeration work: identifying the root causes behind a system's problems and addressing them properly, rather than applying a temporary fix.

If you're dealing with an ageing chiller, poor water quality, or a system that's no longer performing as it should, our team can help. We provide industrial refrigeration services across the UK, from full chiller replacements to ongoing air conditioning service and maintenance. Contact IRS today to discuss your requirements.
