When one of our long-standing education sector clients needed three VRF condensing units replaced at an administrative building, they turned to IRS for a solution that balanced technical precision with minimal disruption to campus life. Here’s how our team delivered a full VRF air conditioning replacement, including a rooftop crane lift, without disrupting the working day.
Universities rely on stable, efficient climate control to keep staff comfortable and equipment protected year-round. When VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) condensing units reach the end of their working life, replacing them isn’t as simple as swapping out a unit. It involves safely removing refrigerant, disconnecting mains power, and physically lifting large equipment on and off a roof, all while keeping a busy university site running as normal.
Our client needed a contractor who could manage the entire VRF replacement process safely, efficiently, and in line with F-Gas regulations, from the first refrigerant reclaim through to final commissioning.
As specialists in commercial air conditioning installation and refrigeration services, our engineers carried out a full end-to-end replacement of the three VRF condensing units, covering:
This complete approach meant our client had a single point of contact for every stage of the project, from refrigerant handling through to a fully commissioned, ready-to-run system.
One of the biggest logistical challenges of any rooftop condensing unit replacement is access. To safely lift the old condensers down and the new units up to the roof, our team needed a temporary car park closure directly beneath the lift zone.
We worked closely with the university’s Mechanical Services Officer to plan the closure around the site’s daily operations, ensuring staff and visitors were informed in advance. Thanks to careful scheduling and an efficient crane operation, the car park was reopened within a couple of hours of closing, keeping disruption to an absolute minimum for a job of this scale.
The replacement was completed on time, to specification, and with full commissioning carried out using fresh refrigerant. Our client now benefits from a modern, efficient VRF air-conditioning system, installed with minimal fuss and no lasting impact on day-to-day university life.
This project is a good example of how IRS approaches every commercial refrigeration and air conditioning installation: technical accuracy backed by careful planning, so our clients get a system that works, without the headache of managing it themselves.
If your business relies on VRF or commercial air conditioning systems that are due for replacement, repair, or an efficiency upgrade, our experienced team can help. From initial survey through to installation, crane lifts, and commissioning, we manage the whole process for you.
